Tutorials – Getting Started With StumbleUpon
Welcome back to Tutorial Wednesday and a new series all about StumbleUpon.
Have you heard of StumbleUpon before?
No big deal if you haven’t because over the next few weeks you will hear plenty!
Let’s start off with an explanation of what StumbleUpon actually is….
According to Wikipedia….
StumbleUpon is a discovery engine that finds the best of the web, recommended to each unique user.
It allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos that are personalized to their tastes and interests using peer-sourcing and social-networking principles.
StumbleUpon sends more traffic to other websites than Facebook, Reddit, Digg d Twitter combined.
Since its main purpose is to help people find websites they’re interested in, they can be a huge source of traffic for web marketers, as well as a great source of enjoyment for everyday users.
Setting Up Your StumbleUpon Account and Profile
The first step to using StumbleUpon is to setup your account.
How you setup your StumbleUpon account in large part defines the experience you’ll have on StumbleUpon.
Why? Because this is where you set your interests, or in other words tell StumbleUpon what kind of topics you’re interested in.
In addition, this is where you also setup your profile and avatar so people can get more of a sense of who you are.
Here’s how to setup your StumbleUpon account and profile…..
Step 1: Register an Account
There are two main ways to register an account.
You can create an account directly with StumbleUpon, or you can do it through your Facebook account.
Start by going to http://www.stumbleupon.com
Then click either “Join for Free” or “Join using Facebook.”
If you chose the “Join for Free” option, fill out the registration form.
If you chose Facebook, give StumbleUpon permission to link to your Facebook account.
Step 2: Select Your Interests
Choose one or more topics that you’re interested in.
StumbleUpon will look at the topics you chose to serve up websites tailored to your interests.
At this point, StumbleUpon is ready to go.
Step 3: Customizing Your Profile
To setup your profile, click the “Home” icon in the upper right corner of the StumbleUpon navigation bar.
Click “Settings.”
Click “Customize Profile.”
Then edit your profile information.
Step 4: Change Your Profile Picture
To change your profile picture, click “Profile Picture.”
Then upload the photo you want to use.
At this point, you’ve created you StumbleUpon account, you’ve added your interests, you’ve setup your profile and you’ve uploaded a profile image.
You’re ready to start stumbling!
So next Wednesday we will continue our StumbleUpon tutorial and show you how to do exactly that!
Leave any questions you have in the comments and I will do my best to answer them for you.
I’ll be back on Friday with another great Top 10 List for you…..
